Summit of the Book Background
The International Summit of the Book was initiated by the Library of Congress to:
- Promote literacy of all kinds
- Showcase the importance of libraries and books
The inaugural Summit took place in Washington D.C. from 6-7 December 2012, with the theme “The Culture Of The Book”, but the Summit will travel to different cultural capitals annually.
This inaugural Summit commenced what library leaders “envision as an annual global meeting of minds to discuss and promote the book as a crucial format for conveying societies’ scholarship and culture.” It is intended that “leaders in academia, libraries, culture and technology will debate and discuss the powerful and crucial form of information transmittal: the book.”
